How to Descend a Series of Features

I love riding in the desert because there are so many downhill sections with several features like roots, rocks, and drops in a row. It might be tempting to do a manual off of every feature; however, this isn’t always a good strategy. If you get air off the first feature, you won't be set up for the next. The "Low–Lead–Recenter" technique will help you navigate a series of features.

Low-Lead-Recenter

This technique uses front-to-back motion. Make sure you're in a low, ready position when you crest a feature. Next, lead the bike out over the feature. Finally, recenter as you land so that you are in a good position to tackle the next feature. Rinse and repeat.

This is a slow-speed skill—not a manual. Instead of thinking about getting your bum back, think about leading your bike forward. Practice this skill over sticks or down curbs in a parking lot.

With practice, you’ll be descending technical downhill sections with confidence — not fear! As always, one of the best ways to improve a technique is to come to one of our clinics or join our online coaching program to receive highly personalized coaching and access to our entire curriculum (like the above skill with much more detail) and weekly support from me.
