The half-pedal stroke, also known as the ratchet, is a simple skill that can make all the difference while riding.
Instead of pedaling all the way through, you can take a half-pedal stroke to avoid striking your pedal on a rock or root. It is a great way to get through rock gardens, over small undulations in the trail and over obstacles. It is also the beginning of a track stand!
To practice, it's best to find a slight incline and be in a fairly hard gear so you have resistance. It is easiest to learn this while seated, then transition to standing once you can "feel" it.
My favorite pedals to use the ratchet on are the CrankBrothers Stamp while wearing my FiveTen Freerider Pro Canvas shoes.
