How to Set Up Your Rear Suspension

Having your suspension set up correctly can make all the difference in your enjoyment during a ride and while learning new skills. Riding your mountain bike can feel stable and comfortable, or it can feel bumpy and stiff. Since we are advocates for stability and safety, we recommend setting up the “sag” between 25%-35% in the front and rear. Some people like their fork (front) closer to 20% and rear at 30%. In general, we recommend 30% as a starting point for both.

Normally this is one of the first items of business we take care of at a clinic. However, we will be using safe social distancing practices this season and we want to do whatever we can to keep a 6-10’ radius between people as often as possible. We understand that you may not have a shock pump at home, so we will be prepared to set up your suspension at the clinic (we have face masks, face shields, disposable gloves and hand sanitizer ready for each clinic).

In the video from Jamis Bikes below, you can see a demonstration about how to set up sag in the rear. The process is really similar for setting the sag on your fork (your front suspension).

Here is an article from REI about how to set sag on your fork and one from EVO to set up front and rear suspension.

Your tire pressure can add or detract from your comfort as well, so be sure to check out our previous article to make sure you are running proper tire pressure.
