After 2 attempts of finding sweet single track were somewhat failed, we decided to do some research (imagine that?!). John talked to some people that said you can't go wrong on the Rim trail from Brockway to Tahoe City via Watson Lake. It turned out to be a gorgeous ride made for cross country riding! No features, no one with 9 inches of travel & knee pads. In fact, we only saw 2 hikers the entire ride. No other riders.
John's cousin's husband Justin rented a bike and joined us. About 5 minutes into the ride his rear derailleur hanger fell off, clean off. He had to collect parts up off the trail and put it back together, that's a rental for you! Justin did great despite living near sea level and on being on a very heavy rental bike.
We had a great time taking in the vistas and riding through varied terrain. There was enough climbing to make me happy and enough dust to give us asthma! There were sections of neon green moss covered trees, shale that sounded like broken glass, some crazy rocky, teeth shattering descents and some smooth trail too. I'd ride it again, which is MUCH more than I can say about Northstar. Luckily we found some good single track up there, otherwise I was ready to boycott riding in northern Cali!
Watson Lake
Our bike ride was followed up with a boat ride, a swim in Lake Tahoe and a little birthday party for Kirkham. That concludes our wonderful week up North!
