With my sweet new bike (thanks to White Pine) in hand it was time to update my fit. I'd read that JHK & Heather had both recently been fit with Retul, so I figured if the best mountain bike riders are doing it, it must be the best system out there right now. (Lance & Dave Z. are on that list of Retul fits too). My friend in Park City referred me to Tim Bochnowski at Mountain Velo as an excellent fitter. Tim has been fitting bikes since the 80's and has been trained in just about every fit system out there. He was trained by the very best including: Todd Carver at Retul, Paul Swift at Bike Fit, and Dan Empfield at Slowtwitch.
Mountain Velo is a cool little space that's perfect for fitting. The rotating bike table, mirrors & real time computer monitor make you feel like a pro just for being there! Tim has fit many of the local pros including cyclocross & mtb pro Bart Gillespie and pro road racer Reid Mumford.
Since I typically spend 4 days a week training on my road bike I knew I better have it checked out. What a good choice, my saddle was almost 8 cm too far back. My angles were all wrong which translates to decreased power. Because of the aero seat tube on the Cervelo we ran into some issues with moving the saddle to the perfect position, but I'm much closer to the Retul recommendation. I can actually reach my hoods and pedal comfortably in the drops. It's been a week and I'm still a little sore, my muscles aren't used to working in this new position, but I'm excited about my increased power and comfort. Additionally, I've decreased my toe numbness.
I'd never had my old mountain bike fitted to me and ironically, it was a much better fit. I guess intuition and feel count for a lot! Tim got my new Flash dialed in immediately. We'd already figured the right saddle height from my road bike and after a few adjustments I was ready to rock and roll on my new machine!
